What a first jiu-jitsu class costs

1,020 academies in 56 cities, each read on its own published pages between July 9, 2026 and September 26, 2026: whether the first visit is free, what a drop-in costs, and what a month runs. No rankings. Every line links to the guide that holds its source.

Before your first class: the printable kit

What the record says

  • 56% of the 979 rooms with a readable first-visit line print a free first class. Another 6% make it free with a condition: residents only, beginners only, event days, a certificate.
  • 105 rooms print a price for the first visit, from ¥300 (≈ $1.9) at Poronitay BJJ (ポロニタイ) in Tokyo to $150 at Skrap Pack Mission in San Francisco Bay Area.
  • In Toronto, every room we could read prints a free first visit. In Warsaw and Curitiba, none does.
  • 196 rooms offer a trial you book, by message or by form, without publishing a price; 61 of them are in São Paulo.
  • Among cities with at least five printed adult plans, the median monthly rate runs from R$320 (≈ $63) in Rio de Janeiro to $229 in San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Among cities with at least five printed visitor rates, the median drop-in runs from RM50 (≈ $12.4) in Kuala Lumpur to $40 in Los Angeles.

City by city

Counts are of the rooms our guide covers in each city, not of every gym in it. Medians are of printed figures only; the ≈ figures are US-dollar equivalents at the rates of September 4, 2026.

Compare what academies publish

Pick a metro and narrow by what each academy's own pages say. Every line links its source and the date it was read; nothing here is inferred from silence, and the tool never ranks.

Saved academies

Nothing saved yet. Save a row to keep it here and in the link you copy.

This view lives in the link's fragment, so it can be shared without creating a new page.

    How to read it

    • Free: the academy's own page prints a free first class, week or trial, with no condition beyond booking it.
    • Free with a condition: free, but the page names who qualifies: residents, beginners, a fixed event day, a document.
    • Priced: the first visit is a product with a printed amount: a drop-in, a day pass, an intro lesson, a paid trial.
    • Book to find out: a trial exists and is booked through a form or a message, but the page neither says free nor prints an amount.
    • No trial door: the page offers enrolment, a consultation or a phone number, or says outright that there is no trial.

    • Jean Jacques Machado Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy: $100 No walk-ins: drop-ins are arranged by email, visitors bring their own gi and rash guard, and a single class is $100

    • BBJJ Bay Parkway: $19.99 The chain's member's-name guest gate applies; the intro is the stranger's door
    • BBJJ Dyker Heights: $19.99 The guest form demands a member's name a stranger doesn't have — the $19.99 intro is the actual door
    • BBJJ Gravesend: $19.99 The chain's member's-name guest gate applies; the intro is the stranger's door
    • Fort Greene BJJ: $20 Three classes for $20 with a loaner gi — 'if you love it, sign up; if not, nothing owed.' At $6.67 a class, by far the cheapest published door into Brooklyn jiu-jitsu
    • Chop & Chops MMA: $30 The ladder is the door: $30 a class, $45 the day, $69 the unlimited week — no conditions, loaner gear for beginners
    • @Jiu-Jitsu NYC — Jackson Heights: $35 Three trial classes in a week for $35, Queens' best visitor value, the money one Renzo Queens drop-in costs. No residency condition is published, but absence isn't permission: ask. A drop-in now exists too: $45 a session, $55 a day pass
    • Renzo Gracie Queens: $35 The inversion, published without hedging: adults pay $35 to try (deducted on signup), children try free — and 'you can show up', the friendliest walk-in line any Renzo-flagged room in the city publishes
    • Brazilian Jiu Jitsu New York City: $39.99 The $39.99 trial is NYC-residents-only; visitors are welcomed at a drop-in rate you must ask for
    • NYC BJJ Academy: $39.99 The $39.99 two-class trial is NYC-residents-only — current policy on all three sites. Travelers are welcomed separately, at a drop-in rate you must ask for
    • 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu NYC: $50 The trial policy contradicts itself on the room's own FAQ — a $50 credited mat fee in one answer, a free trial in the next. Both recorded, neither resolved: ask. What is unambiguous: visitors from other schools are welcome, and there are showers
    • Park Slope Academy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (PSABJJ): $50 No free trial: an incoming student's first day is a 50 day pass plus 50 uniform, credited on same-day enrollment — while a guest pays 75, the higher rate, stated plainly
    • Williamsburg MMA: $50 No free trial. The door is a tuition plan booked through the app, the shortest being weekly passes ($75 unlimited, $50 per discipline); no single-class product prints. 'No long-term contracts. No pressure.'
    • Peak Performance | Caio Terra Academy Queens — College Point: $99 The $99 intro month is the door — unlimited, gear included, no commitment — and the only way in without the $220 registration fee. No drop-in is published

    Conditions on the free ones

    • Marcelo Garcia Jiu-Jitsu NYC (MGJJ): The free trial is for tri-state residents with ID — a traveller pays the $50 day pass, but is welcome anytime: no reservation, any academy's gi accepted, no rental gis, showers on site
    • Renzo Gracie East Side: A free private intro for the never-trained; visitors pre-register for a day pass covering that day's classes (price unpublished, mornings excluded) — and no gi-color or insignia restrictions at all, the counter-example to the borough's wardrobe gates
    • Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Upper West Side: Two doors, both conditional: the free trial is NYC-residents-only, the visitor pass is 'intended for practitioners with training experience' — and no walk-ins, ever; every first visit is booked ahead. The never-trained visitor should email first
    • Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Wall Street: Same doors as the UWS sibling: a residents-only free trial, visitor passes for the experienced, and no walk-ins — every first visit is booked ahead
    • Unity Jiu-Jitsu School: 'Everyone is welcome — you don't need to ask.' First day free for tri-state residents; otherwise $40 weekdays, $25 weekends, $100/week — Manhattan's cheapest visitor ladder, with the city's cheapest gi rental ($10)
    • Workshop NYC: The free week is NYC-residents-only; everyone else pays the $35 drop-in or $100 week. No gi rentals — but a donation bin at the door lends gear free. Gi colours: white, black or blue, no exceptions
    • Warriors Nation MMA: The drop-in welcomes travelers loudly — then conditions the welcome on prior experience. The never-trained start with the free intro session instead
    • Marlon Colorado BJJ: A free 3-day trial, no experience needed — with the academy's own openly stated division: the trial for locals, the $60 pass for visitors; only the word 'local' goes undefined
    • Queens Jiu Jitsu — Astoria: This guide's clearest eligibility gate: the $30 drop-in is for people currently training elsewhere — a non-training beginner is refused it and offered the free by-appointment trial instead, gi rental included free
    • JMA Brooklyn: A free trial gated by an asterisk — '* Must meet eligibility requirements' — whose requirements are published nowhere. This guide's least legible hidden condition. No drop-in rate either
    • Pillar Jiu Jitsu: The free trial day is tri-state-scoped in its own heading — and then, unlike every gated room in this guide, the fee for everyone else is published right below. And no gi requirements: wear whatever gi you want

    • Splicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, in Higashi-Kasai: The trial is free, one time per person, and explicitly for people who intend to join, per the own site
    • Mikazuchi Jiu-Jitsu Academy (ミカヅチ柔術アカデミー): A free walk-in trial (any class, one time, no reservation, arrive before class); height and weight are asked in advance, and visitors who belong to another jiu-jitsu or martial-arts gym cannot try or observe
    • PATO STUDIO (Sugamo and Otsuka): One free trial for prospective members with a gi loaned free, reserved in advance through the site form with your class chosen; questions go through the official LINE
    • Waseda Akatsuki Dojo: One free first session, for prospective members only: the site now says visiting practitioners, drop-ins and short stays are excluded, and the 14-day free unlimited trial of July is gone. • Wandsworth BJJ (GFTeam London): A TWO-LANE trial, split by experience: complete beginners get the first class FREE; experienced grapplers pay £15 up front, 'redeemed against the cost of the joining fee if you decide to join' (own /about-us, verbatim) — the first experience-segmented trial in this research
    • Carlson Gracie London (Main Academy): A fenced free trial plus an open paid layer: 'First Class Is On Us — 1 x Free Session' BUT, verbatim, 'Trial classes are for London residents considering joining'. Visitors are routed to the paid tier: Drop In £20/session ('Perfect for visitors or trying different classes') · 5 Class Pass £100 · 10 Class Pass £180
    • Roger Gracie Academy HQ: Two published doors. (1) Free induction — 'FREE INTRODUCTION CLASS' (book the INTRO class via Mindbody; experienced visitors are routed to call/email). • Oasis BJJ Club (Checkmat) A published day pass — the emirate's only published adult day-pass product: 65–75 AED (the homepage's two sections differ — 65 in the standing membership-fee section, 75 in the pre-register 'welcome offer' block; both require booking at least 2 hours in advance). A grand-opening welcome-offer funnel and sign-up form also run — confirm the current rate when you book

    • Antara Jiu Jitsu Academy: AED 100 (≈ $27) 'Book a trial class' is the door — the published trial product is a paid juniors trial (AED 100 for a full session, listed value AED 160) with booking buttons for Little Lions, Juniors 1 and Juniors 2 (boys and girls). No adult trial product publishes, so adults should ask by phone or email. Note: the nav's 'Join Today!' button is a broken link — use the homepage's trial button
    • Heroes Academy Martial Arts: AED 107 (≈ $29) 'Book Your Class Now!' plus an inquiry form is the door — nothing is promised free. The published visitor product is the non-member per-class rate (see pricing); confirm the current amount and times when you book
    • CH Martial Arts Academy: AED 120 (≈ $33) No free trial is promised — the published single-visit product is the path: a BJJ day rate of AED 120 (45-minute group class, one session). Note it publishes on the male-class page; no ladies-BJJ product appears on the academy's channel, so women interested in BJJ here should ask the academy directly

    • Alliance Dubai: A free trial class publishes — with conditions: trials are open to beginner students only, a gi is required, and gi rental is AED 50 (two extra fundamentals classes come with joining). No trial or drop-in path publishes for experienced visitors — ask by phone or email first

Mexico City 4 priced first visit

    Priced first visits

    • Atlas Grappling México: MX$90 (≈ $5.3) The visitor rate, 'Costo Visitante', is $90 MXN per hour — and the room's own page warns that classes run 'de una hasta dos horas', so one class costs $90–$180 depending on its length. No free class is published; book by phone (+52 55 1256 7002) or e-mail
    • Academia Diosdado de Artes Marciales (ADAM): MX$100 (≈ $5.9) A paid trial class — the only one in this corpus. In the room's own words: 'Inicia con una Clase de Prueba: Por solo $100 MXN … (reembolsables al inscribirte)' — $100 MXN to try, refunded against your enrolment if you join. Credit and debit cards accepted
    • The Klan Martial Arts / The Klan BJJ: MX$350 (≈ $21) The published first visit is a paid one: a single class, '1 Clase', at $350 MXN, booked through the site's own 'Reservar' / 'Comprar' flow. No free class or trial week is published on this site
    • The Klan — Umaah haus: MX$350 (≈ $21) The published first visit is a paid one: a single class, '1 Clase', at $350 MXN from the operator's own price page, booked through its 'Reservar' / 'Comprar' flow. That page names no venue, so it covers the operation rather than this mat alone, and no free class or trial week is published anywhere on the site. Do not confuse it with the building's own product: UMAAH HAUS separately sells 'UMAAH PASS' credits at $350 for one class, valid seven days and usable across the 29 studios in the building. Same figure, different thing

    Priced first visits

    • BIWA Jiu-Jitsu Berlin: €15 (≈ $17.4) The first class is free — 'Free Trial Class – come try', in the room's own words. After that a single visit is 15 €, and 10 € for the women's class; women also get 50% off membership for their first three months. Gi rental 10 €
    • Flow Motion Studio: €16 (≈ $18.6) A movement and acroyoga studio, not a BJJ academy, running two weekly self-defence classes built on BJJ fundamentals. The published door is a paid single visit: «All of our adult classes and open training sessions are offered as drop-ins», at «Single Class Drop-In — 45- / 60- / 75-min: 16 €». Both BJJ-fundamentals classes run 60 minutes, so a single visit costs 16 €. A «Trial Card: 39 € any 3 classes» sits beside it. Booking is advised, not required: «To ensure there is space for you in a particular class, we recommend booking in advance.» Language runs the opposite way to most Berlin rooms — «Classes are taught in English unless otherwise noted, with German translation available» — and both BJJ-fundamentals classes are separately marked «Auch auf Deutsch»
    • MMA Berlin (Sportschule MMA Berlin): €20 (≈ $23) The trial here is sold, not given, and the house prices it plainly: “Preis für ein Probetraining: 20 €”. This is the Berlin lesson in one line — “Probetraining” names a trial, not a free trial, and only a figure beside the word settles the cost. A joining fee is published separately: “Die Anmeldegebühr beträgt 40 €.”
    • Chimosa: €25 (≈ $29) The published first-visit route is a paid single class, in the house's own English: 'Drop In Class 25 € ✔️ Valid for 14 days ✔️ 100 % flexibility ✔️ Book via Chimosa App'. Not a free trial. A member's guest can come three times free under its 'Bring A Friend Benefit'
    • Choke Athletics: €30 (≈ $35) The published single-visit product is a paid day rate — the price page's “EXTRAS” block reads “Day pass 30€ — Valid for one day — Full gym access — All disciplines — Open mats included”, beside “10-class pass 250€ — Access for 10 classes — No expiration date”. An earlier record carried “Das erste Training ist kostenlos” (“the first session is free”); that line was not re-read this pass, so ask before assuming it
    • Xuan – Gong Fu Academy: €30 (≈ $35) No free-trial product was found on the pages read. What the school publishes instead is a priced day rate, under “Full-time / Live in the academy and practice all-day everyday”: “Short-Term / 16 days or less / 30 € / Per day”, then “Short-Term / 16 days up to one month / 500 € / Per month”, “Mid-Term / 3 month or longer / 450 € / Per month” and “Long-Term / 6 month or longer”. That is a day rate sold to people who come to Berlin to train, and it is the published door for a visitor. Whether a single class can be bought outside it is a question for the school
    • Ringside Gym Berlin: €30 (≈ $35) The trial here is a product, not a gift — the clearest instance of that in this city. A one-week BJJ trial is 30,00 € (20,00 € on a promotion running to 23 August 2026); a one-month BJJ trial is 85,00 € (60,00 € on promotion). Trial or regular training, you buy a Trainingsticket first, and each adult may use one week-trial and one month-trial
    • Hochschulsport, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin: €39 (≈ $45) The beginner route is a paid taster course, not a free class or a drop-in. Two of the four BJJ-family courses are 'Schnupperkurs' blocks and both are priced — 18/32/42/51 € and 19/25/29/39 € for the five-week run, with a member of the public paying the fourth figure. Kit: bring a drink and sportswear; a judo or BJJ gi is listed, and 'Anfänger/innen können auch ohne Gi kommen' — beginners may come without one
    • GhostGym Berlin: €60 (≈ $70) A paid beginner package, not a free class: 'SCHNUPPERKURS — DREI KURSE DEINER WAHL FÜR 60 €' — three classes of your choice, valid one month, 60 €. A single class costs 30 €, so the package is the same price as two single classes

V.: A four-week free trial across the department's sections: «Wir bieten allen Interessierten die Möglichkeit, unsere verschiedenen Sektionen 4 Wochen lang kostenlos und unverbindlich auszuprobieren» — four weeks, free, no obligation. It carries a seasonal blackout the club states just as plainly: «Achtung: kein Probetraining während der Berliner Schulferien» — no trial training during the Berlin school holidays. Read on 17 August 2026, inside the Berlin summer holidays: on that day the trial was not running. Check the school-holiday calendar before you plan around it

    • Hunter MMA: 40 zł (≈ $10.8) No trial word is published — the entry product is the 40 zł single entry (kids 30 zł). For minors the page sets a hard rule: a parent or guardian must attend the first visit and sign a written consent
    • Academia Gorila Warszawa: 59 zł (≈ $15.9) No trial word exists on the channel — no 'trening próbny', no free class. Method

Every row comes from the academy's own published pages: its site, its booking page, its printed price sheet. For every room with a readable first-visit line, the quoted passage used to classify the academy, the page it came from and the date it was read stand on the academy's card in its city guide; rooms whose pages print no such line are marked as not readable and carry no quote.

A room counts only when its guide entry is complete enough to publish: a verified name, address and a published page we could read. Fields the page does not settle are marked as such rather than guessed. Rooms we recorded but could not verify are not here, so the counts describe what our guides cover, not every gym in a city.

We did not visit or book. Terms change, campaigns end, and a page may have moved since it was read. If a line is wrong, the academy's own page wins: tell us and we will correct it.

Monthly figures are the lowest printed standard adult rate for unlimited training where one prints, otherwise the lowest printed standard adult monthly; where a page prices women, students or another group separately, the standard tier counts and the others are noted. Commitment lengths differ from room to room and are noted in the dataset where the page states them; visitor month passes are excluded. Where a page prints two conflicting amounts, both are recorded and neither enters a median.

Dollar equivalents use the European Central Bank's reference rates of September 4, 2026, and open.er-api.com for the currencies the ECB does not list. They are for comparison only.

Corrections and additions: how we verify, and where to write.

    The data

Every figure on this page stands academy by academy on the city guides, with the page it was read from and the date. The compiled rows are not distributed as a file. Quote the figures with a credit to the study and its version; for research access to the rows, write to hello@wayofyawara.com.
