Learning jiu-jitsu in the Loop and near sides

This guide covers the Loop and the sides that touch it: River North, the West Loop and the Near West Side, and the South Loop. Downtown Jiu Jitsu Club at 226 S Wabash prints a free intro, «Single Class Drop-In: $35» and a «7-Day Guest Pass: $75», the city's clearest visitor register, with classes by appointment through its booking widget. Valko BJJ at 820 N Orleans prints a text grid, «Your first class is always free» and «$150.00 every month». Chicago MMA South Loop at 110 E Cermak prints the paid register, «7 days. $49. Unlimited classes for one week.». The Chicago School of Grappling on S Racine prints «GET 7 DAYS FREE» and, in the same breath, «We do not allow walk ins», so book before you go. The rest of the area is recorded from the directories.

Chicago MMA — South Loop

Who this academy suits

The South Loop's paid register, stated plainly: Chicago MMA at 110 E Cermak Rd, by McCormick Place, is a Ralph Gracie lineage room with Luta Livre and Sityodtong Muay Thai under the same roof, founded and led by Misho Ceko by the site's own words, and it sells the first week rather than giving it away — «7 days. $49. Unlimited classes for one week.», adults only. The weekly grid prints as text with an «August 29, 2026» reference date: an 11 AM gi-or-no-gi lab, noon no-gi grappling, 5 PM gi classes, a no-gi drilling-and-sparring block and 7 PM grappling and wrestling — though the page flattens its table, so which day each cell falls on has to be read in the member app after you buy the week

Why we say it: The address, phone, the leadership block, the lineage line, the trial banner and modal, and the schedule cells are the gym's own published site content, fetched 2026-09-03; day columns are withheld because the text layer flattens the table

For the no-gi grappler: the South Loop cells are weighted to no-gi — noon grappling, the 5:00–6:30 PM drilling-and-sparring block, 7 PM grappling and wrestling for BJJ — with the gi classes at 5 PM and the 11 AM lab open to either; one membership covers the Lincoln Park room too

Why we say it: Counted from the South Loop section of /schedule and the home's «Two locations. One membership.» line, fetched 2026-09-03

Class schedule
The South Loop room's weekly text grid («August 29, 2026» reference): an 11 AM «Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Lab (Gi OR No-Gi)», noon no-gi grappling (two cells), 5:00 PM gi BJJ (two cells), a 5:00–6:30 PM no-gi drilling and sparring block, 7:00 PM no-gi grappling (two cells) and wrestling for BJJ (two cells), kids at 4:15 PM, Saturday 9:00 AM kids competition (invite only). The page flattens the table, so the day of each cell is not recoverable from the text

Chicago School of Grappling

Who this academy suits

The Near West Side's free week, with a rule attached: Chicago School of Grappling at 722 S Racine Ave, off the Racine Blue Line stop, prints «GET 7 DAYS FREE» and «Try as many classes as you can in 7 days» in its own words, no annual contract — and then prints the rule that matters more than the offer: «We do not allow walk ins», so the seven days go onto your account first and every class is booked before you arrive, on time or ten minutes early. The timetable itself lives in that booking flow, not on the page, and no price prints on the site

Why we say it: The address, the directions, the free-week lines, the no-walk-ins rule and the be-on-time rule are the school's own published site content, fetched 2026-09-03; the timetable is withheld because the Mindbody flow prints no times to the text layer

Downtown Jiu Jitsu Club

Who this academy suits

The Loop's visitor door, and the only Chicago room with a page written for you: Downtown Jiu Jitsu Club at 226 S Wabash Ave, a private Gracie Jiu Jitsu academy «led by Adem Redzovic» by its own words, keeps an «Out of Town Guests» page that prices the visit outright — «Single Class Drop-In: $35», «7-Day Guest Pass: $75» — welcomes «guests from out of town as well as guests visiting from other local Chicagoland Jiu Jitsu schools», rents a gi, and lets you stay for more than one class the same day. A local beginner takes the other door, the «Free Intro» by application. What it does not print is the timetable: every class is «By Appointment Only» behind a passcode and a booking app, so book first and read the times there

Why we say it: The address, phone, the lead-instructor line, the drop-in prices, the guest-pass price, the gi-rental line, the free-intro application flow and the appointment-only notice are the club's own published site content, fetched 2026-09-03; the timetable itself is withheld because the Wodify widget prints no times to any client this pass reads

For the week-long visitor: the «7-Day Guest Pass: $75» is the metro's only printed week pass, and the page says the single drop-in «is ideal for visitors» — buy online before you arrive, since the building needs a passcode and every class is booked ahead

Why we say it: The guest-pass line, the drop-in line and the appointment-only notice, from /visitor-information and /schedule fetched 2026-09-03

Valko BJJ — the Valko Jiu Jitsu Academy in River North

Who this academy suits

River North's most legible door: Valko BJJ at 820 N Orleans St prints its whole week as text — gi on Monday and Wednesday, no-gi on Tuesday and Thursday, each with a 7:00 AM class, a noon class and a 6:15–8:00 PM evening, plus Friday, a Saturday fundamentals class at 10:30 and a Sunday morning gi class — and puts a «BJJ Fundamentals» slot in front of every weekday evening at 5:30 and on Saturday morning. The first class is «always free» in the site's own words, and the prices are printed rather than hidden: «Monthly Full-Membership $150.00 every month», a fundamentals-only plan at «$100.00 every month», and a «10-Class Pass $200.00» for anyone who cannot commit to a month

Why we say it: The seven-day grid, the free-first-class line and the membership ladder are the academy's own published site content, fetched 2026-09-03; the address is the network's own footer, cross-checked by three directory rolls

For the visitor who trains before work or at lunch: a 7:00 AM class Monday to Thursday (gi Mon/Wed, no-gi Tue/Thu), a 7:00 AM open mat on Friday, and a noon class every weekday — all in the printed grid; the 10-class pass is the natural buy for a short stay

Why we say it: Counted from the /schedule text grid and the /membership ladder fetched 2026-09-03

How do I book a trial class?

It differs by academy. Where we could verify the booking method, it is listed under "Your first visit" in that academy's entry; otherwise, asking through the academy's official channel is the most reliable route.

I'm a complete beginner. Can I just show up?

It differs by academy. Entries show where a fundamentals program and first-visit process are verified. For the rest, check with the academy before visiting. For what a first class actually feels like, see the beginner posts on our blog.
