What jiu-jitsu costs per month, city by city

Where academies print a price, an adult month of jiu-jitsu runs from about R$320 in São Paulo and ¥13,200 in Tokyo to about $229 in the San Francisco Bay Area, by the median of what each city's verified academies publish. That sentence carries three qualifications, and they matter more than the numbers: only academies that print a plan count, the figure is the lowest printed standard adult rate for unlimited training whatever the contract length, and a joining fee or a licence often sits beside it. The first-visit study read the published pages of 1,020 verified academies in 56 cities; 314 of them print an adult monthly rate the study could use. This page is the monthly slice of that study, version 2026-09-05, for the 17 cities where at least five rooms print one.

The table

Medians are of printed figures only. The dollar equivalents in parentheses use the European Central Bank's reference rates of 4 September 2026, and open.er-api.com for the dirham, which the ECB does not list; they are for comparison, not a price anyone pays. "Rooms" is how many academies in that city print a monthly rate, out of the rooms the guide covers. A drop-in median needs five printed drop-ins too; where fewer print, the cell says so.

Cities where fewer than five rooms print a rate are on the study page with their own counts; they are not in this table because a median of three prices is a coincidence, not a market.

What the number is, and what it is not

The monthly figure is the lowest printed standard adult rate for unlimited training at that room, whatever commitment it requires, or the lowest standard adult monthly where no unlimited plan prints; where a page prices women, students or another group separately, the standard tier counts and the others are noted. That rule is the same for every city and is written on the study page, and it means the number often assumes a contract. Berlin's €80 median comes from a city where 9 of the 25 printed rates are on 12- or 24-month terms, and the rooms that print both terms print the month-to-month plan higher: BJJ Akademie Berlin prints €99 on a 24-month term, €129 on 12 months and €159 month by month. The dataset notes the contract term where the page states it. Visitor month passes, the products some London rooms sell to travellers, are excluded from the medians.

Two costs sit outside the number. A joining, registration or licence fee prints beside the monthly rate at some of the rooms that print prices, and some print that there is none: $220 registration at one Queens academy, a €40 joining fee at Fightzone in Berlin, a federation licence at some Paris clubs, "no joining fee" at Tung Dojo in Berlin. And a gi, where the room requires one, is a purchase of its own. A month at the median is rarely the whole first bill.

Why the cheapest city is the wrong question

Converted into dollars, the table reads like a ranking. It is not one. A São Paulo academy at R$320 and a Bay Area academy at $229 are priced against different wages, rents and expectations, and the study makes no claim about which is better value. The dollar equivalents exist so that a reader travelling between two cities can compare what they will be asked for; they say nothing about what the locals feel. The same warning applies inside a city: the range column is wide everywhere, and a printed median is not a promise about the room down your street.

How to read a price sheet

Four things settle what a month really costs, and academies print them in different corners of the page.

1. Unlimited or limited. "Unlimited" means every class the plan covers; "2× a week" or "8 classes a month" is a smaller product at a smaller price, and some sheets lead with it.
2. Contract length. Where a room prints both, the rate on a 12-month term is lower than the month-to-month rate for the same access: Marcelo Garcia in New York prints $250 on an annual plan and $350 month to month, Range $275 against $325. Ask what happens if you stop after a month.
3. The joining fee, and what it buys. Some include a gi and a belt; some are pure enrolment.

The medians above are of rows in the first-visit dataset, version 2026-09-05; each contributing row carries the academy's own price page, the quoted amount and the date it was read, between 9 July and 4 September 2026. The method lists the rule for choosing the monthly figure and what the study cannot see; the city guides carry each academy's printed plans on its own card. Prices change; a figure read in August is a figure read in August.
