Learning jiu-jitsu in Sydney's city & inner east
This guide covers Sydney's city fringe and inner east-south — Woolloomooloo, Alexandria and Botany. Three full entries, and every one starts free. Higher Jiu Jitsu in Woolloomooloo gives you two doors in: a $35 intro session printed beside a free, no-obligation private intro lesson (plus a named «28-Day Kickstart» onboarding), with no contracts or sign-up fees. Gracie Alexandria carries the Gracie Humaita Australia footer on every page. And Gracie Botany prints the most beginner-protective trial in the city: four people at most, first-timers only, trial uniform provided, by appointment. No door posts its membership prices — Sydney is a city where the booking conversation carries the price. For someone just starting, the real question is not "which academy is best" but "which one fits me."
Open mats in City & inner east
Rooms whose published schedule prints an open mat, each with the complete recorded summary of that schedule, its source and the date it was read. What an open mat is, and what a beginner does with one
- Gracie Botany A printed Mon–Sat grid: adults from 6:00 am (Gi and a No-Gi morning), lunchtime blocks, adults open mat, kids 5–13 in Gi and No-Gi bands, teens/competition kids, and a foundations program — with «Intro / Trial – by appointment only» printed right on the grid source · 2026-08-25
- Higher Jiu Jitsu Sydney Fundamentals, Advanced, No-Gi skill development, open mat and Jits4Kids (ages 4–7) — doors Mon–Fri 6:30am–9pm, Sat 9am–2pm, Sun 10am–12pm source · 2026-08-25
A schedule is what the page printed on the day it was read. The academy's card carries the visitor and price facts recorded for it; where admission to an open mat, or its cost, is not published, ask the academy.

Gracie Alexandria
Who this academy suits
The Gracie Humaitá flag in Sydney's inner south: Gracie Alexandria at 3/576 Botany Rd carries the network's Australian footer on every page, publishes a slate from toddlers to Gracie No-Gi, and opens with a site-wide «Book A Free Trial». The per-slot timetable and prices live behind the booking conversation rather than on the page — the trial CTA is the door
Why we say it: The Humaitá footer, the address, the program slate and the free-trial CTA are the club's own published site copy, fetched 2026-08-25

Gracie Botany
Who this academy suits
The gentlest first step in Sydney's south-east: Gracie Botany's free introductory class is capped at four people, reserved for those who have never trained, comes with a loaner uniform, and runs by appointment — the most beginner-protective trial fine-print in this guide's Sydney records. Behind it sits a dense printed grid with 6:00 am adult classes (including a No-Gi morning), lunchtime blocks, open mat, women-only classes in the nav and a full kids ladder at 11-13 Lord St. Prices aren't posted — call or use the form
Why we say it: The four-person cap, first-timers-only line, loaner-uniform note, by-appointment rule, the printed weekly grid and the address/phone are all the club's own published site copy, fetched 2026-08-25

How do I book a trial class?
It differs by academy. Where we could verify the booking method, it is listed under "Your first visit" in that academy's entry; otherwise, asking through the academy's official channel is the most reliable route.
I'm a complete beginner. Can I just show up?
It differs by academy. Entries show where a fundamentals program and first-visit process are verified. For the rest, check with the academy before visiting. For what a first class actually feels like, see the beginner posts on our blog.
