Jiu-jitsu for women: what academies publish, and what to ask
Our count of the site's directory labels found a women tag on 133 of 1,020 complete guide entries, or 13.0%. That tag can reflect information such as a programme or a price; it does not establish that the academy offers a women-only beginner class. Check the evidence in the individual entry, then confirm the class and its terms with the academy.
What academies publish
Separate three questions when reading an academy's page:
- Classes. Does it name a women's class, and does it explicitly welcome complete beginners?
- Prices. Does it publish a women's membership, and which classes does that membership include? The first-visit study records a standard adult monthly amount for 314 entries. For Tri-Force Takao in Tokyo, it records ¥9,900 for general membership and ¥8,800 for women.
- Missing information. If the entry does not answer either question, ask the academy. An absent directory tag does not establish what classes or prices are available.
The first-visit study records published offers and information gaps for 1,020 entries. Some free offers have conditions, including residency or beginner status. Check whether an offer applies to you and to the particular class you want to attend; is the first BJJ class free explains the categories.
Before the first class
I am about a month into training and have not been cleared to spar. This guide draws on published information; it cannot tell you what a particular class will feel like. Your first class: what actually happens is the site's account of one first session, in order.
Before attending, ask how the first session is structured, how partners are selected, and whether any positional work involves live resistance. Ask what clearance beginners need for sparring, and whether you can request a different partner, decline an exercise or observe.
The gi, and what the rules say
For class, ask the academy what clothing it requires and whether it provides a gi for the trial; what to wear to your first class has the general answer.
In IBJJF gi competition, article 8.1.4 requires athletes in female divisions to wear a stretchy, body-hugging shirt beneath the gi. It may have short or long sleeves, with no colour requirement. The article also permits a one-piece swimsuit or gymnastics top. Article 8.1.3 prohibits shirts beneath the gi in male divisions.
Article 8.1.8 permits athletes in female divisions to wear body-hugging elastic pants beneath the gi trousers, provided they are shorter than the gi trousers.
Article 8.3.8 permits head covers in female divisions. A cover must be fixed and made from elastic fabric or have elastic borders. It must contain no plastic, other hard materials, strings, inscriptions or logos. Permitted colours are black, white, black and white and/or the athlete's belt colour. The article also permits an elastic one-piece hood covering the neck, ears and all the hair, in those colours.
Belts and divisions
The IBJJF uses the same white-to-black belt sequence for women and men: white, blue, purple, brown and black. BJJ belt order sets out its minimum ages and waiting periods.
If you decide to compete, confirm your eligible division and the weigh-in requirements with the event organiser.
What to ask before the first class
- Does the women's class accept complete beginners, and can I attend it for a trial?
- How will my training partner be chosen? Can I request a different partner or choose to observe?
- Is a gi provided for the trial, does it cost anything, and what must I wear underneath?
- If there is a women's membership, which classes does it include and what commitment does it require?
- What changing facilities are available, and is there a private option?
Choosing a gym applies as it does to anyone: ask to watch a class before you sign.
Questions readers ask
Is jiu-jitsu good for women?
The sources used here describe published offers and competition rules. They do not establish personal benefits or safety outcomes. Ask about beginner teaching, partner choice, class access and facilities when deciding whether to try a session.
Do jiu-jitsu gyms have women-only classes?
Some guide entries document women's classes. The 133 entries carrying the site's women tag also include other information, such as women's prices, so that figure is not a count of women-only classes. Confirm whether the class you are considering accepts beginners.
What do women wear under a jiu-jitsu gi?
Ask the academy about class requirements. In IBJJF gi competition, article 8.1.4 requires a stretchy, body-hugging shirt with short or long sleeves and no colour requirement. It also permits a one-piece swimsuit or gymnastics top.
Can you wear a hijab in jiu-jitsu?
IBJJF permits head covers in female divisions under article 8.3.8. A cover must be fixed, made of elastic fabric or have elastic borders, and contain no plastic, other hard materials, strings, inscriptions or logos. Permitted colours are black, white, black and white and/or belt colour. An elastic one-piece hood covering the neck, ears and all the hair is also permitted in those colours. Ask the academy about its class policy.
Do women pay less for jiu-jitsu?
Some entries record lower women's prices. For example, the first-visit study records monthly rates of ¥9,900 general and ¥8,800 women at Tri-Force Takao. Confirm the current price, included classes and membership conditions before comparing plans.
