Learning jiu-jitsu in North Austin
This guide covers the seven rooms of Austin's city-north, around the Domain and Burnet Road. It is the smallest band in the metro, but its doors are open: Fight Factory's first class is free in its own words — 'No Commitment, No Cost.' For someone just starting, the real question is not "which academy is best" but "which one fits me."

Fight Factory Jiu-Jitsu (legal entity: Brazilian Fight Factory, LLC)
Who this academy suits
A beginner who wants a real, updated weekly timetable and a deeply documented instructor pedigree: Beginner Gi and Beginner No-Gi classes twice a week each, a no-commitment free first class, and a head instructor with a five-promoter, dated lineage running back to 1996 — the most documented pedigree in the Austin epic
Why we say it: The room's own booking platform publishes 23 machine-readable weekly sessions (rebuilt 2026-07-15); the free-first-class claim is on the primary marketing pages; the instructor's lineage is on the room's own page (all captured 2026-07-29)

- The room's primary marketing copy states a free first class in its own words — 'No Commitment, No Cost' — bookable via a short contact form with no residency or referral condition. One caution: the separate dedicated trial page reuses another academy's text and its buttons do not work, so book through the main page's form
- Class schedule
- 23 active weekly sessions on the room's own booking platform: Beginner Gi Mon+Wed 6:15 PM, Beginner No-Gi Tue 6:15 PM, White Belts Only Fri 5 PM (belt-exclusive), 11 All Levels sessions including four at 7 AM, and a Women's Class Tue/Thu 12:30 PM plus Sat 9:30 AM. Closed Sunday

Born 1981 in Rio de Janeiro; blue belt 1996 under Ricardo 'Ricardão' Holanda; purple belt 2002 under Fredson Alves (Gracie Humaitá); brown belt under Rocian Gracie; headed London Fight Factory through 2008 — the deepest published lineage in the Austin epic. Also on staff: William Tackett, Andrew Tackett, Kody Steele, Davis Cole, Tiffany Butler
Kingsway Jiu-Jitsu — the room's own site names Gordon Ryan, John Danaher and Garry Tonon as its leadership trio (formerly New Wave Jiu-Jitsu)
Who this academy suits
Especially a beginner or traveling visitor: this room's rule runs backward from most gyms — local residents who cross-train elsewhere in Austin are barred from the Pro class, while a first-timer or someone passing through can buy a $75 drop-in class on a live checkout with no residency proof, straight into one of twelve weekly Beginner – Gi sessions
Why we say it: The room's own programs page states the cross-training exclusion verbatim, the schedule table shows 12 weekly Beginner – Gi sessions, and the Kicksite checkout sells a $75 single-class pass live with no gating fields (verified 2026-07-29)

- A live, purchasable rate card on the room's own booking system — not just quoted, a real checkout: single-class drop-in $75, 1-day unlimited $125, 1-week unlimited $225, 2/3/4-week unlimited $300/$350/$400. No residency proof or existing-gym requirement to sign up. The one published restriction runs the other way: visitors are welcome in the Pro class, while local residents who train at a different Austin gym are not — aimed at local competitors, not travelers or beginners. Veterans and first responders get 20% off memberships with proof of service
- Class schedule
- A real published timetable: Beginner – Gi runs twelve times a week (6 AM and 6 PM Monday–Friday, plus 9:30 AM Saturday and Sunday) — a beginner can train seven days a week. Advanced Gi/No-Gi, Pro No-Gi, Kids and Teens classes fill out the rest of the week

Puro BJJ — the booking form's legal-entity name, 'Atos Jiu-Jitsu Central LLC,' is a leftover from before de-affiliation, not a current network claim
Who this academy suits
A total beginner who wants the on-ramp pre-assumed: a named 'Beginner program' for people with no experience, Fundamentals and Beginner Class - Gi twice a week each, and a free trial form whose experience field already defaults to 'This is my first time' — plus a $30 drop-in and $90 week pass with no residency or referral gate
Why we say it: The room's own JS bundle publishes the 14-row timetable and the named Beginner program; the trial form's default field was captured directly; pricing is published on the room's own booking widget (verified 2026-07-29)

I'm a complete beginner. Can I just show up?
It differs by academy. Entries show where a fundamentals program and first-visit process are verified. For the rest, check with the academy before visiting. For what a first class actually feels like, see the beginner posts on our blog.
