Learning jiu-jitsu in Steglitz-Zehlendorf

This guide covers the south-west, out to the Wannsee lakes — 5 rooms recorded, 1 with a full entry. That one, Sportschule Rahn, brands itself “Kampfsport seit 1906” and keeps “Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)”, “Jiu-Jitsu” and “Kyusho Jitsu” as three separate menu entries, which is what makes its BJJ a programme of its own rather than a renamed traditional class. Fees run 57,50 € a month for one session a week, 67,50 € for two and 77,50 € unlimited, every tier carrying “Probetraining inklusive”, and the school offers two trial sessions. One line on its own page should be read before you go: “ Die Sportschule ist momentan sehr voll. Anmeldung zum Probetraining erfolgt ausschließlich über die "MySports" App. Bitte erscheint nicht unangemeldet.” — very full at the moment, trial sign-up only through the app, please don't turn up unannounced. That is an instruction about how to book, not a shut door, and it is recorded here as what it is. One more thing to ask when you book: the school publishes two Standorte — Nicolaistraße 13-15 and Goerzallee 188 — and says which of them holds the jiu-jitsu is in the app's course titles, behind a login this research did not enter. The rest of this page is thin for the same kind of reason: one room's every URL currently serves the notice “EVLTN 2.0 kommt. / Baustelle – on und offline.” while its gym is rebuilt, and one club's entire published geography is the single word “zehlendorf”. That gap is ours, not theirs. For someone just starting, the real question is not "which academy is best" but "which one fits me."

Who this academy suits

A long-established Steglitz school — “Kampfsport seit 1906” — whose Brazilian jiu-jitsu is unmistakably its own programme rather than a renamed traditional class: BJJ, Jiu-Jitsu and Kyusho Jitsu run as three separate menu entries, and the BJJ page describes Gi and No-Gi, throws as well as ground work (“denn BJJ Kämpfe beginnen im Stand”) and hard sparring at the end of every session. It publishes an affiliation — “Die Sportschule Rahn gehört zum internationalen BJJ Team Cicero Costa PSLPB” — and prices covering the whole school rather than one course: “1x Woche — Erwachsene 57,50 € /Monat” up to “Unbegrenzt — Erwachsene 77,50 €”, each tier reading “Alle Sportarten / Flexible Zeiten / Probetraining inklusive”, with no joining fee in sight. The BJJ class is “ab 14 Jahren”. The thing to get right before going is the door: the school publishes “Die Sportschule ist momentan sehr voll” and “Bitte erscheint nicht unangemeldet”, and plainly “Leider ist die Nachfrage so groß, dass wir unangemeldete Interessenten wieder nach Hause schicken müssen.” Sign-up for the two free trial sessions runs only through its “MySports” app. There are two addresses — “Nicolaistraße 13-15” in Lankwitz and “Goerzallee 188” in Lichterfelde — and which holds the BJJ sits in the app's course titles, so check when you book. Worth asking on the mat: the BJJ page names two different men as its black-belt coach in three sentences, and neither belt carries a grantor

Why we say it: Every quoted byte is the school's own sportschule-rahn.de, read 2026-08-17 under robots “User-agent: * / Allow: /” with no crawl-delay (berlin-d2-ledger-w1.md §C.23). The capacity lines are quoted verbatim with their read date under §18.3, with the “closed”-side polarity and booking-required flag §19.4 added — they are §18.3's second surface, access prose with no capacity vocabulary in it, which a term list scores as no signal and which nonetheless decides whether a beginner gets on the mat. Two venues publish as two pins under §13.7; which one holds the BJJ is stated as unpublished because the school directs that question into an app behind a login that was not entered, and no schedule is claimed for the same reason and under §19.5. The three-way instructor conflict is quoted in full and left unresolved; both black belts ship without lineage under §10.10. The “gemeinnützig”/“GmbH” conflict and the two spellings of the network are carried, not normalised

Trial
The school's own offer: “Jeder Kampfsportinteressierte kann bei uns 2 Probestunden absolvieren” — two trial sessions — with “Probetraining inklusive” repeated on every price tier. The route is the point, and the school says it twice: “Anmeldung zum Probetraining erfolgt ausschließlich über die "MySports" App” and “Bitte erscheint nicht unangemeldet.” Book in the app first — the school publishes that unannounced visitors are sent home source · 2026-08-17

Classes and cost

Membership
The school's own bytes: “1x Woche — Erwachsene 57,50 € /Monat · Kinder (bis 14 Jahre) 52,50 €” · “2x Woche — Erwachsene 67,50 € · Kinder 52,50 €, ab 2. Kind: 47,50 €” · “Unbegrenzt — Erwachsene 77,50 € · Kinder 62,50 € (57,50 €)”. Every tier carries “Alle Sportarten / Flexible Zeiten / Probetraining inklusive” — one membership covers the whole school, not the BJJ course alone. No joining fee of either German word appears source · 2026-08-17

Location, instructors, contact

Address
Two pins, both published by the school: “📍 Wir haben 2 Standorte. Bitte achtet beim Buchen in der MySports App darauf, dass ihr den richtigen auswählt – er ist im Kurstitel angegeben.” · “Standort 1: Nicolaistraße 13-15 / 12247 Berlin” · “Standort 2: Goerzallee 188 / 14167 Berlin”. Which venue holds the BJJ is not published — the school says the answer is in the app's course titles, and the app is behind a login that was not entered source · 2026-08-17
Instructors
The house names two different black belts as *the* black belt, in three statements on one page: “mit Schwarzgurt-Trainer Elijaih Funston (USA) und Braungurt Marvin Gauer”; “Unsere Trainer Jan Tatarynowicz (Schwarzgurt) und Marvin Gauer (Braungurt)”; and “Schwarzgurt-Trainer Jan Tatarynowicz und Marvin Gauer mit Braungurt”. All three are carried, none resolved by us. No grantor is published for either black belt, so both ride as the school's claims about its own coaches. The “/Ueber-uns/Trainer” roster names no BJJ coach at all — the BJJ coaches exist only on the BJJ page source · 2026-08-17

Frequently asked questions

How do I book a trial class?

It differs by academy. Where we could verify the booking method, it is listed under "Your first visit" in that academy's entry; otherwise, asking through the academy's official channel is the most reliable route.

I'm a complete beginner. Can I just show up?

It differs by academy. Entries show where a fundamentals program and first-visit process are verified. For the rest, check with the academy before visiting. For what a first class actually feels like, see the beginner posts on our blog.
