Learning jiu-jitsu in Zona Sul
This guide covers Rio's beachfront districts — Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon through Botafogo and Flamengo — where the traveler stays. The real question here is "I'm in Rio eight days: can I train, and what will it cost?" From a day pass (diária) you can buy online to the conditions hiding in booking forms, everything comes from what each academy publishes itself. For someone just starting, the real question is not "which academy is best" but "which one fits me."

What's missing is any price at all: a full-text sweep for every Portuguese trial/drop-in/mat-fee term returned nothing, and the site's '#pricing' nav item is a disabled template leftover, not a hidden price list. Where Nova União actually trains in Rio — the network's own founding room, run by Dedé Pederneiras, on Flamengo's main street, ten minutes from the Catete/Largo do Machado metro. It's a full-service fitness academy with a fight wing, not a standalone BJJ gym — expect a pool, a weight room, and reception hours from 5am. It is also the hardest room in this entire sweep to approach: no trial class of any kind is published, no price, and — uniquely in this sweep — no WhatsApp anywhere on the site. The only way in is a phone call during business hours, or showing up in person, exactly as the plans page itself suggests: 'call or come visit us'

The catch, printed on the academy's own booking form: the free trial is fenced to residents of the city of Rio de Janeiro, photo ID is required at the door of the private club it sits inside (AABB-Rio), and every session must be booked in advance by WhatsApp — nobody simply walks in
