The decision, in short

If you may join: up to three free trial sessions, but not a walk-in: put your name in the club's calendar by the evening before, marked as a trial. Membership is among the lowest published in the city: a one-off €10 joining fee, then €15 a month standard, €9 reduced for apprentices, pupils, students, benefit recipients and pensioners, €5 for under-18s.

If you are visiting: no drop-in or day price was found in the sources checked; ask. All three jiu-jitsu slots are marked beginner by the club itself: no-gi Monday 19:00 to 20:30, gi Tuesday 19:00 to 20:30 and Friday 19:00 to 20:30.

Who this academy suits

The cheapest published way into Brazilian jiu-jitsu in Friedrichshain, and one of the most beginner-shaped. MATAR is a small association training in the gymnasium of the Thalia Grundschule at Alt-Stralau 34, a short bus ride from Ostkreuz, and all three of its jiu-jitsu slots are labelled '(Beginner)' by the club itself: no-gi on Monday evenings, gi on Tuesdays and Fridays, ninety minutes each. Membership is 15 € a month, 9 € reduced for students, apprentices, pensioners and people on benefits, 5 € for under-18s, with a one-off 10 € joining fee — and up to three free trial sessions before any of that. One thing to get right: this club counts heads before every session. Put your name in its calendar by the evening before, marked '(Probe)' for a trial, and its newsletter carries per-session sign-up links. That is not a door being closed; it is how a volunteer-run association in a borrowed school hall knows who is coming. Enter from the street through the staff entrance

Why we say it: All bytes from the club's own channel, matar-ev.de, read 2026-08-17; its robots.txt excludes nothing, established before the first request. The founding sentence with its typos, the kit sections, the full timetable with its '(Beginner)' labels, the address with its staff-entrance instruction, the transit line, the fee list, the three free trials, the calendar sign-up requirement and the Doodle-link newsletter line are the club's own. The capacity field is published under §19.4 as a booking-required flag with its read date — not a stop, not a cap, never discouragement. The brown belt ships as the club's claim; no grantor is published. D1's address-less seating is discharged by the club's own address

Location, instructors, contact

Address
Alt-Stralau 34, 10245 Berlin — the gymnasium of the Thalia Grundschule, entered from the street through the staff entrance. One venue, and the entrance instruction matters on a first visit source · 2026-08-17
Instructors
'Philipp Markert — BJJ Akademie — BJJ Brown Belt. Trainiert BJJ seit 2013' — a named brown belt, published by the club, alongside Martin Walter, training no-gi and BJJ since 2013. The wider roster carries grades in other arts, including a Bujinkan 5th dan and a capoeira Monitor. No grantor is published for the brown belt, so the belt ships as the club's claim and no lineage does source · 2026-08-17
